The Edmonton Oilers held their annual development camp tournament today open for fan-viewing, and one prospect in particular was miles ahead of everyone else.
The Oilers acquired
Matthew Savoie last offseason with the intention of bringing in some elite young talent, and now it looks like he'll be given a full time roster spot next year.
Matthew Savoie among standout prospects at development camp, guaranteed to make NHL team
Of course, Oilers insider Bob Stauffer was dialled into the 3 on 3 tournament, and relayed to fans that Matthew Savoie was an absolute standout at camp. Stauffer went as far to say Savoie is a lock to make the team.
One thing often lost with Savoie: Last season was his first year playing a full season with one team since 2022-23. The year of development has done wonders, and he now looks like a sure-fire NHLer.
Additionally, other fans watching had noted recent prospect signings
Quinn Hutson and
Nathaniel Day as standouts. Both will
start in the AHL, but it's a positive sign for their development.
It's great to hear Savoie's development is back on track with the Oilers, and he'll be on the NHL roster this season. It's possible the Oilers will be adding a cost controlled young star to their lineup - exactly what they've desperately needed for a while.
