The Edmonton Oilers signed forward David Tomasek just before the playoffs, a highly coveted Europeans free agent who is expected to make the NHL roster next year.

The Oilers had a quieter July 1st than many fans would've liked, but the slew of European free agent signings like Tomasek will give Edmonton some cheap depth with some upside to perhaps overperform their contracts.

New Oilers forward David Tomasek opens up on joining Edmonton

Tomasek is a 29 year old right shot centreman who's spent his career grinding through the Czech Pro Leagues, the KHL, and the SHL. Spending the last two years with Farjestads BK, Tomasek broke out to become the league's top scorer with 57 points in 47 games.
In a recent interview, Tomasek revealed that he almost signed with Edmonton last season, and was in talks with a few other teams, but ultimately decided on the Oilers for their great recruitment and high-end roster.
«I wouldn't say there were that many. Two or three teams that were more seriously interested. I had some discussions with Edmonton last year, but it didn't work out. Some clubs were only offering two-way contracts. I guess the deciding moment was when they visited me in Sweden.

He also revealed that he was dialled into the NHL's Stanley Cup Final last season. Surprisingly, Tomasek didn't give any pros to his new team - he thought Florida was far better and fully deserved the win. He may not be wrong, but it's a little blunt.
Yeah, I couldn't not watch it. Really amazing hockey - something incredible for June. Edmonton gave it a good fight, but Florida was the best team in the NHL and didn't give them much of a chance. They deserved to win. It's incredible what those guys can do.

The Oilers could definitely use a player of his archetype in the bottom six. A strong two-way player with offensive talent, hopefully Tomasek will be able to translate his game to North America.
If he can keep up his quality play, Tomasek should land himself in the Oilers top 9 next season, and forge out an unlikely NHL career for himself at 29 years old.
