It has been well-documented that the Canucks will attempt a rebuild, with Insider Elliotte Friedman saying 'the team is making veteran players available in an effort to get younger', including former-Oiler Evander Kane.
Reports are circulating that say Quinn Hughes wants to play with his brothers Jack and Luke in New Jersey. Seems like the obvious destination about which to rumor.
Except, even the Devils' President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford, said as much officially.
It may not boil down to money with [Quinn]. He said before he wants to play with his brothers. That would be partly out of our control. In our control if we brought his brothers here.
Currently, Vancouver is one point out of last place in the Pacific after 25 games, right above Calgary.
If the Canucks don't improve and find they cannot secure Quinn beyond his UFA-eligible date of July 1, 2026, they'll likely trade him at the trade-deadline, rather than risk losing him for no return.
Incidentally, Vancouver has several pending-UFAs, including Evander Kane. Kiefer Sherwood is having a decent season with 12 goals, on pace for at least 40.
I wonder if there is a scenario that sees Kiefer in Edmonton, along with Thatcher Demko for one last run at the Cup.
The Oilers have until Christmas to show GM Stan Bowman they don't need major reconstruction. So far, they've failed to prove they're a contender.
Except, there are still many games left to play, and anything can change. It's been known to happen.
