Trent Frederic will play in the regular season for the Edmonton Oilers
According to a previous update from NHL insider Chris Johnston, Frederic's injury could've held him out for the entire season.
This would allow the Oilers to put his salary on LTIR, which with double retention, is only $575K. However, it then raises the question of why the Oilers would pay so much for double retention if the player isn't available until the playoffs.
Insider John Shannon has provided a more positive update, revealing that Frederic around 2-3 weeks away from playing for Edmonton.
Trent Frederic is probably 2-3 weeks from playing for Edmonton. Today was the first day he was seen without a walking boot. He is supposed to start skating shortly. The Oilers certainly won't rush the process.
Hopefully Frederic is able to get back into the lineup with sufficient runway before the playoffs to get used to his new team.
Frederic is having a down offensive season, but at 6'3 and playing center and forward, he'll bring some much needed attitude and physicality to the Oilers bottom six. Ideally, he can be a younger
Corey Perry for the Oilers.
Edmonton spent a premium to acquire Frederic with double salary retention, giving them some financial flexibility for more trades to come. Starting off with Trent Frederic is a highly exciting add for Oilers fans.
Keep an eye out for the Oilers to swing at least one more deal before the March 7th trade deadline.
