Ike Howard's much-improved play of late has resulted in the coach's trust on the ice and praise of the young forward off the ice.

Head coach likes how young forward is developing

"I wanted to reward the guys who were playing well, and Howard was one of those guys."
The trick, of course, to earning more ice-time from your coach is really quite simple: Play hard, make a difference in-game, and go to the net - oh, and score some goals.
When you look at Howard's stats from his last game, it's easy to see why his coach was pleased with his efforts. He was 1st among all players in xG, second in ixG, and 1st in xG%, among other stats that confirmed he was an effective for Edmonton from the first drop of the puck.
Ike Howard scored his first career goal against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday, on McDavid's forced turnover early in the 2nd-perio. Leon Draisaitl was the beneficiary of the turnover, who broke-out on a two-on-one, passing the puck to Howard for a one-timer into the net.
Isaac Howard has been earning more ice time for the Oilers due to his high-end skating ability, hockey sense, and competitive drive, which has shown sparks of chemistry with skilled linemates like Leon Draisaitl.
His ability to anticipate plays and find open ice, combined with his competitiveness, makes him a valuable addition to the lineup.
This offseason, Edmonton made a concerted effort to get younger, relying on Howard and Savoie to develop into effective NHL'ers.
Though the results were modest in the first few games, they've since been noticeable on the ice, and have been rewarded for it.
Matthew Savoie had a strong game against Montreal picking up an assist on Walman's goal by winning the faceoff. He was all over the place, winning puck battles and killing penalties.
With this kind of effort, the two 21-year old are making their claim to stay in the lineup.
