The Vancouver Canucks have completed a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks to acquire forward Lukas Reichel.
Vancoucer Canucks complete trade for Lukas Reichel after heavy link to Oilers
Blackhawks insiders today confirmed the trade today, sending Reichel to Vancouver in exchange for just a 4th round draft pick.
Reichel is a 23 year old German forward and a former first round draft pick under GM Stan Bowman. He had the makings of a high-end offensive prospect, but has struggled to carve out a meaningful role on a poor Blackhawks team.
Last season Reichel only scored 22 points in 70 games, but he's off to a hot start this year with 4 points in 5 games. He may just need a change of scenery to unleash his skill.
For just a 4th round draft pick, it's a great risk-to-reward trade for the Canucks. Reichel is only owed $1.2M in salary this season, and will be a RFA on expiry.
Although the Oilers were interested and likely could've met the Blackhawks asking price, there just may not be enough room to add another fringe forward in Edmonton. As it stands, the Oilers may need to make a trade to clear a roster spot themselves.
We'll see how Reichel is able to adapt to the new environment in Vancouver, but it's possible the Canucks just scooped up a promising young talent for peanuts in trade.
