In an emotional post-game interview, Oilers' Vasily Podkolzin honored his late father with a game-winning goal against the surging Montreal Canadiens.
Oilers' forward's first goal a game-winner he won't soon forget
It's a huge loss for me and my family. Right now, just playing with good memories of him and just making him proud every day. He always wanted me to win a cup, Unfortunately, he will not see it, but he'll see it another way, on the other side.
Thank you guys. It was a tough month, to be honest. I wasn't feeling pretty good; you guys and my teammates made it easier.
- Vasily Podkolzin
In the preseason, Podkolzin took a leave of absence following the death of his father, but has since returned to play, thanks in large part to the Oilers' organization and teammates' support.
That Vasily's first goal of the season was also the game winner against Montreal adds even more importance, as the team attempts to stay within striking distance of first place in the Pacific.
Though currently tied with the Ducks for third place, Edmonton is only three points out of tying Vegas for first. The early going of the season has been somewhat up and down, but the Oilers seem to have found its stride, and it showed in last night's game.
In addition to the game-winning goal, Podkolzin added an assist, raising his points total to four in eight games played.
He is on pace for a career-high in points, 27. Vasily is also noted for his contributions to the team beyond just scoring, including a significant physical presence. He continues his work ethic on the ice and led the team in hits last season.
