According to the team's announcement, former-Oiler draft pick Linus Omark has signed a professional try-out with HC Lugano in Swedish Hockey League for the 2025-26 season.
The 38-year old Omark retired from the NHL following his first and only year with the Buffalo Sabres. He would play his final 29 games in North America with the AHL's Oklahoma City, before heading to Europe.
Former-Oiler remembered for his famous 'spin-move' in his NHL debut
During his first NHL season with Edmonton in 2010-11, Omark had a respectable showing with 27 points in 51 games. He also gained attention for scoring a shootout goal with a spin-move during his NHL debut.
After his first season, Omark's ice time and production decreased with the Oilers, and he was eventually acquired by the Sabres, the team from which he would retire from the NHL.
Linus has spent the last four years playing in the Swedish Hockey League, with the club Lulea, the same team with which he turned pro at the age of 20, and with which he won an SHL championship last season.
In addition to his NHL and European hockey career, Omark has represented Sweden during the 2007 WJC and at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Coincidentally, the club for which Linus Omark is trying out did not qualify for last season's playoffs and is in the process of rebuilding its roster. In addition to Omark, they've also added former NHLers
Rasmus Kupari, Connor Carrick, Brendan Perlini and Zach Sanford.
It is uncertain, however, when Omark will make his debut with HC Lugano, though given its poor start of 1-6, it will likely be soon enough.
There have been many reports over the years of players and fans emulating Linus Omark's famous spin-move.
While playing against the TB Lightning, Omark executed a "spin-o-rama" move, followed by a five-hole shot past goalie Dan Ellis to win the game, which was seen by some as disrespectful, like Ellis himself.
Others, however, appreciated the showmanship and creativity, seeing it as a breath of fresh air for the shootout, bringing an element of skill and flash to a part of the game that can sometimes be viewed as repetitive.
