Calgary Flames fans mocked the Edmonton Oilers by chanting «McDavid's leaving» through their rookie series game yesterday.
McDavid began to ignite discussion by saying that «no term» was a possibility when asked about his next contract. Just the fact McDavid has gone this long without a new deal was relatively unexpected, and Flames fans are letting it air out.
Flames fans mock Oilers with chants during rookie games
In their first chance to get a dig in at the Oilers, Flames fans let out chants of «McDavid's Leaving» chants during the rookie games.
It's fair game as long as McDavid remains unsigned, but Calgary Flames fans should remember that their superstars actually did leave their team in free agency and trades.
At the end of the day, taunts between rival teams are expected even in pre-preseason hockey. However, the noise around McDavid's contract is going to dial up across the NHL if he remains unsigned.
The best player in the NHL entering the season as a pending UFA is huge news for every team, and it will only gain more attention the longer McDavid remains unsigned.
McDavid himself insists that his contract situation won't be a distraction if he enters the year without a contract, and the same should be true for the rest of the locker room. However, they won't be able to control the chants of opposing fans.
Hopefully
Connor McDavid finally comes to terms on a new contract before the beginning of the regular season, and Oilers fans can exhale about the Captain's future - and contend for the Stanley Cup once again.
