TSN's Ryan Rishaug tweeted that Edmonton Oilers executives Stan Bowman and Jeff Jackson have traveled to Ontario to discuss contract talks with Connor McDavid's agent Judd Moldaver.
Contract talks between McDavid and the Oilers will become front and centre of the Oilers news cycle as McDavid will be eligible to sign a contract extension which will kick in in 2026 on July 1st.
Bowman and Jackson laying groundwork for future with McDavid
These discussions our starting point for both sides as Connor McDavid will likely ask on what the future holds for the Oilers over the next number of years if he were to decide to sign an 8-year extension.
Many questions continued to swirl around the Oilers after they had lost back-to-back Stanley Cup finals to the Florida Panthers and what the roster configuration will look like.
Rishaug feels that the Oilers are not negotiating numbers at this time and want to give Moldaver and McDavid a chance to understand where they stand as an organization and where his role will fit.
Many pundits around the NHL and fans across the league have speculated on what McDavid will do this summer.
There has been a wide range of rumors from McDavid exploring other teams when he's eligible next year to taking a shorter-term deal and to sign an 8-year extension with the Oilers.
McDavid set to become the highest paid player in NHL history
McDavid is entering his eighth and final year of his contract which is currently holding a cap hit of $12.5 million per season.
The 28-year-old superstar had another great year despite having some injury issues where he was only able to play 67 games.
He had scored 26 goals, with 74 assists for 100 points along with 37 penalty minutes.
McDavid has been a model of production for the Oilers especially in the playoffs which will certainly garner him the highest wage in NHL history.
With his best friend and linemate
Leon Draisaitl signing his long-term deal last year at an 8-year deal at $14 million per season, it's likely that McDavid will be north of 15 million either with the Oilers or with another organization.
Oilers fans can only wait and see what the future may hold for their superstar and the Oilers management do not want this to drag out for an entire year and is likely beginning the process now to try to secure a contract prior to the opening of training camp.
Unrestricted free agency is set to open on July 1st at 12:00 PM eastern.
