The Edmonton Oilers may be set up to make some strange roster moves before the NHL's deadline to a submit cap-compliant roster.
A number of new Oilers rookies have made a positive impression at camp and are expected to make the team, including Matt Savoie, Ike Howard,
David Tomasek, and more. However, they may still be sent down.
NHL experts reveal Oilers may use combination of roster moves to begin this season
The NHL has banned the use of «paper roster moves» in the upcoming season, but the rule won't take effect until October 10th. That will give teams some buffer room with the cap compliant rosters deadline.
Because the Oilers have a number of injury concerns near the start of the season, they may have to use some paper roster moves.
Zach Hyman being out for a month may influence their roster decisions.
According to PuckPedia, the Oilers will get the most cap room possible and reduce risk of losing players on waivers by sending down Savoie, Howard, and Tomasek, and calling them back up before Game 1.
If this is the most beneficial route forward for the Oilers to construct their roster before the October 6th deadline - and not lose a player like Regula, Stecher, or Emberson on waivers - they'll need to do this. In the pursuit of a Stanley Cup, every player and ever transaction matters to give the team their best chance of success.
So if the Oilers seemingly make the strange roster move to send down NHL ready players like Savoie and Howard this week, don't worry. They should be back on the roster before Game 1.
