With Connor McDavid signing at an historic low AAV, especially for a player of his quality, analyst Jeff Marek believes he did so to help Edmonton acquire help for a Stanley Cup push.
Analysts debate Oilers' greatest need to bolster its lineup
Connor McDavid has been upfront about wanting to win in Edmonton now, with speculation all around him that he wants GM Stan Bowman to deal for top-level help. Well, now he can, with the help of the Captain.
The question is, where does he allocate that money? Is it Connor McDavid wants his Jarri Kurri? Is it Connor McDavid wants his Ilya Sorokin?
Connor McDavid didn't leave money on the table to fill out the bottom six, your bottom pair, or your backup netminder. McDavid left money on the table so his manager has room to maneuver here.

And remember, Mattias Ekholm also signed a team-friendly deal at an AAV of $4M, which kicks-in next year, of course; but the Oilers are well-positioned to make a big move at the trade-deadline.
The Oilers have the early part of the regular season to determine if and where to bolster its lineup for a push toward a deep post-season run, though the most obvious position would be the goaltender.
But the GM won't make a move for the sake of one, or because new money is available. Stuart Skinner is primed to have a good start to the season and is ready to prove the naysayers wrong. And with Calvin Pickard proving to be a sold back-up, they could very well be the two we see in playoffs.
Things change quickly in the NHL, however; we may just see the GM pull-off a blockbuster deal for a top-goalie. Or a top winger for Connor McDavid. But wishing for something is one thing, making it a reality is quite another, as teams may not be willing to give up their best wingers.
