It seems that former-Oilers draft pick Shane Lachance will get a chance to play for the New Jersey Devils, the same organization where his father Scott Lachance is Head of US Scouting.

And not only has Shane made the opening-day roster, but has performed admirably this preseason, rating above many of the established New Jersey Devils.

Oilers' draft pick traded for physical, hard-nosed forward for refusing to sign with Edmonton

Shane Lachance reportedly refused to sign with the Edmonton Oilers after selecting him in the 2021 NHL draft. The Oilers traded his rights in March 2025 because all signs indicated he would not sign with them and would instead become a free agent in the hopes of playing with his father, Scott Lachance.
Shane Lachance had a strong showing in the New Jersey Devils' preseason and training camp. After being acquired by the Devils from the Oilers in a three-team trade on March 4, 2025, Lachance signed an entry-level contract, two-years at a $925K AAV.
Lachance followed this up with a strong showing at the 2025 Prospects Challenge, where he was named an alternate captain and impressed with his physicality and scoring touch, delivering big hits and demonstrating his skill, including two goals (one power play) and an assist in two games.
Shane Lachance, the son of former NHL player Scott Lachance, has made the New Jersey Devils' opening night roster for the 2025-26 season mainly due to injuries to several roster players, though he did earn his spot ahead of several other prospects vying for a place on the Devils' lineup.
Lachance captained the Boston University Terriers in the 2024-2025 season, where he recorded 30 points (12 goals, 18 assists) in 40 games and helped lead his team to the National Championship game. His goal, assist, and point totals ranked in the top five among Boston skaters.
Devils' Assistant General Manager Dan Pandolfo praised Lachance's hockey intelligence and ability to adapt to different roles and linemates, suggesting he possesses the hockey IQ necessary to play at a high level.
The Oilers may have given up a prospect with some potential in Shane Lachance, but getting Trent Frederic in return, at a retained-salary, has also been good for the Oilers.
