After losing in the Final the last two seasons, Connor McDavid has made it clear the Edmonton Oilers must win the Stanley Cup this year.
McDavid has declared seasons as «Cup or bust» in the past, but the sting of two straight finals losses in the context of an expiring contract has raised the stakes. The Oilers' Captain is demanding a whole new level from his team this year.
Connor McDavid sends hardcore message to Oilers and entire NHL
Speaking to media for the first time this year, McDavid said the Oilers need to reach a level that is untouchable by anyone else in the NHL, with the sole goal of a championship in mind.
They've been knocking on the door for two years, but both times were beat on merit by a better team in Florida. The Oilers need to find a way to raise their level to take down the Panthers, or any other team they could run into in the playoffs.
McDavid did express some frustration with the tactics of the team in the Cup Final, and the team will also have some new personnel this season.
There's been a significant overhaul of the forward group, and the strong defence group remains intact - but there's been no change at their weakest position of goaltending yet. If they truly want to be untouchable, they'll need to be much better in the crease.
Until McDavid signs, there's something imperfect in his eyes, whether effective youth or strong enough goaltending or something else.

Hopefully the Oilers front office can make the finishing touches to this team in-season, and the group can come together to play an improved style of hockey to make them untouchable in next year's playoffs.
