In his 6th, and latest edition of a serial-periodical that hockey writer Jim Parsons calls McDavid v. the Decade of Darkness he writes about the period following Connor McDavid being drafted 1st overall in 2015, and the reasons why the Captain will likely stay in Edmonton for 8 more years.

It's a fortuitous read, really, considering the hype surrounding the Oiler Captain's upcoming contract extension.

Edmonton winning the Draft Lottery in 2015 changes the Oilers organization's fortunes for a decade, and counting

When analyst and hockey writer Jim Parsons of the The Hockey News first learned that Edmonton had won the lottery in 2015, he ran up and down the aisles of the lacrosse arena he was attending shouting, Edmonton won McDavid!!
Though Connor was a generational player, few at the time knew the extent of what he could do for Edmonton, transforming the Oilers into an envied franchise from the day he was drafted.
Elite speed and on-ice leadership second-to-none has changed the Oilers almost single-handedly, from a middle-of-the-road team, to a perennial contender. Connor dominated his way, with the Oilers on his back, to the top of the list of NHL favourites to win the Stanley Cup next season.
McDavid clicked with Leon Draisaitl, himself drafted the year prior, and in his own right, a superstar. They are as formidable a duo as there ever was in the league, one McDavid will be hard-pressed to replicate on another team.
Finally, McDavid confirmed that he wished to remain in Edmonton by signing his first 8-year extension at $12.5M per year seven year ago. Now, it would appear, he is set to sign another extension.
Everything about the superstar-Captain of the Oilers points to him remaining for another 8-years. As he's done in the past, he will give his team every chance to win a Stanley Cup, he is that committed.
Besides, playing for the team that you love and who is close to winning the big-prize, hardly seems like a sacrifice. In fact, he'll probably want to remain in Edmonton for as long as he possibly can.
