Botched Oilers' trade has Oilers losing the Stanley Cup
Analyst Pierre McGuire, while a guest on The Sheet with Jeff Marek suggested that the solution to the Oilers winning the Stanley Cup last year was available for them to take at the trade-deadline.
While speaking about Edmonton's goaltending of last season, Pierre McGuire has this to say:
Pierre McGuire: Oilers goalie search: Did they miss out on Swayman? It was volatile beyond belief with what was going on with the goaltending situation there [Boston]; I just wonder if they [Edmonton] didn't miss out on hitting a homerun with Boston to solidify their goaltending - The Sheet (8/25)

Now, there will always be static in the media about what the Oilers could have, or should have done to get past the Florida Panthers and secure a Stanley Cup in last year's Finals.
In his comments to Jeff Marek, McGuire referred to both of Boston's goalies as being available last year, Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman. The former goalie would eventually be traded to the Ottawa Senators, where he had a good year, and the latter would stay put in Boston, and have a bad year.
Marek, however, wasn't convinced that Ullmark was, in fact, Edmontos's solution, given the goalie's lack of experience in high-pressure situations; Edmonton is nothing, if not an intense hockey-market.
Jeremy Swayman, despite remaining in Boston, had a poor 2024-25, finishing the year with a 3.11 GAA and .892 SV%, perhaps the result of Boston's GM Don Sweeney using his contract negotiations to air-out criticisms of the goaltender.
Yet, it did not stop Jeremy from cashing-in on an 8-year, $66M contract with the Bruins.
The question that comes of all this, now that Edmonton find themselves in pretty much the same position as last year at this time is, how serious is Oiler's management about finding a goaltender that can help win the team a Stanley Cup?
As of today, nothing has been done on the goalie-front.
