Oilers' Leon Draisaitl responded yesterday to a message former-Oiler Derek Ryan had posted on social media following the expiration of his contract with the Edmonton Oilers.

"Du bist unglaublich", Leon Draisaitl wrote in his native German on social media: You are amazing.

Fans and teammates react to Derek Ryan's message on social media

Derek Ryan had written the following heartfelt message yesterday:
"Edmonton, thank you for the best 4 years. My family and I will always cherish the city, the memories that we made there, and most importantly the relationships that we formed. We might be leaving, but those relationships will last forever"

It was not only teammates that reacted to the beloved former-Oiler, however. Fans left messages and comments also, an indication of how well-liked Derek Ryan was when he played in Edmonton.
"He understood his role on the team and played it well during his time," one fan wrote. "I wish him and his family well in whatever pathway he chooses."

Another fan said: A reliable veteran that did everything asked of him. Good luck in your future, whatever you do.

And another still commented: What a class act. He wasn't flashy, didn't put up insane numbers, joined the league as an older player, but he did what he needed to do, and he was happy to do it. Would love to see our Stormin' Mormon retire and live a relaxed, happy life. so long, DR10, and best of luck!

Could not have said it better myself. Derek did not begin his NHL career until the age of 29, and played every shift with determination and passion to stay in the lineup with his various clubs.
He played with the Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames, and of course, the Edmonton Oilers.
