After a grueling first few months of the season where the Oilers have faced several major opponents and internal problems, it appears the NHL has given the team a break and has lightened up their schedule for the month of January.
The Oilers will only face three teams in the top 15 including the Toronto Maple Leafs while the remainder will be near the bottom third of the standings. This presents Coach Knoblauch and his Oilers a huge opportunity to gain some ground in the standings and pile up the wins that they so desperately need.
The Oilers currently sit seven points out of a playoff spot with a total of 31. They are at 500 with a record 15-15-1 and hold four games in hand over the Nashville Predators hold the second wild card spot.
Of course, much can happen over the next few months especially with the trade deadline coming in March, but it's safe to say that the team could go on the heater and position themselves in line with the wild card spot or in a playoff spot itself.
The Oilers are currently on a western road swing where they are playing against the Sharks, Kings and the Ducks.
