Down 1-0 to Detroit in the third period while heavily out-chancing the Red Wings, McDavid decided to put the Oilers on his back and make an incredible individual effort to tie the game. With just a bit of spare ice, McDavid jumped on a loose puck at the blue line and sped in quickly enough to split the defence and make a smooth move on the goaltender to finish it off.
Minutes after McDavid's goal, Zach Hyman joined in to score another goal in a career season for him, giving the Oilers a one goal lead late in the third period. Without McDavid's unreal solo effort, the Oilers may not have been able to even stay in the game against Detroit. Nurse went on to deliver the OT winner, giving the Oilers their ninth straight victory, tying a franchise record.
