In the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast on Sportsnet, Elliotte Friedman delved into the goaltending situation for the Edmonton Oilers, shedding light on their pursuit of a new netminder amid Jack Campbell's struggles in the AHL.

Friedman revealed that the Oilers recently closely assessed the goaltending talent within the Montreal Canadiens, expressing potential interest in acquiring either Cayden Primeau or Sam Montembeault.






The situation with Montembeault carries an intriguing angle, as the goaltender has yet to finalize his anticipated contract extension with the Canadiens. Friedman points out that this unresolved extension could pose a hurdle for Montreal in any trade discussions. Montembeault, a 27-year-old goaltender, has been with Montreal for his third season, joining the team via waivers ahead of the 2021-22 season. His performance has been notable, boasting a .908 save percentage through eight games this season and a .901 save percentage in 40 games last year.


Importantly, Edmonton's focus isn't to replace sophomore goalie Stuart Skinner but to find a solid backup option. Friedman suggests that Montembeault could be an economical choice for the Oilers if Montreal is open to parting ways with him.
