Vancouver Canucks nearing Elias Pettersson trade, reports NHL insider
The Vancouver Canucks look on pace for a full tear-down rebuild, and the next player to leave may be centreman Elias Pettersson.
The Canucks made their biggest splash already by trading Quinn Hughes earlier this year, and now have also moved forward Kieffer Sherwood. They appear to be moving quickly in this rebuild, and now Pettersson could be on the move within the next few weeks.
NHL insider reports Elias Pettersson could be traded before Olympic break
According to a new report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Canucks are making progress on Pettersson trade talks and could even finalize a trade before the league's Olympic break on February 5th. Not only that, but they're ready to tear down the roster entirely.
I think there's definitely a growing suspicion from teams that [a Pettersson deal] happens this year. There are some thinking maybe even before the Olympics. That feels kinda quick, but the Canucks have been in the spot where they're ready and willing to consider anything and everything pretty much throughout the course of the organization.

Seravalli went on to indicate that the Carolina Hurricanes are emerging as one serious trade destination for Pettersson, with other teams also expressing interest.
Pettersson is in just the second year of an 8-year contract paying him $11.6M annually, a massive deal that's quickly turned sour in Vancouver. The 27 year old centre is on pace to score just 58 points this year - down from his 102 point season in 2022-23.
Any team trading for him will be taking on a significant risk that he can be more productive in a new environment. For the Canucks, getting out of his contract would be a win entirely.
We'll see if the Canucks continue their roster tear down by trading their biggest piece remaining in the next few weeks.
