Oilers coach reveals crucial update on Leon Draisaitl return from leave of absence

On January 17th, the Oilers announced Draisaitl would be taking a leave of absence to attend to a family illness back in Germany. It's completely understandable for Draisaitl, and the Oilers want to extend all support possible for their superstar.

After practice today, Coach Knoblauch confirmed that Draisaitl should be returning from Germany and back into the lineup later this week. In addition, Kasperi Kapanen has already started skating following his injury.

Aside from tonight's game against the Devils, the Oilers will only have two more games this week. A return before Thursday's game against Pittsburgh seems unlikely, so the Oilers may be anticipating a return on January 24th against Washington for Draisaitl.

That said, the Oilers should only be anticipating. Draisaitl should be given all the time and space he needs to deal with his family, and only return when he's comfortable again.

It's obviously a disadvantage for the Oilers to be without their superstar centreman, but family matters far more than a few regular season games in January.

In the time being, it's actually a good opportunity for some Oilers to get some increased ice time and trials in some higher roles. The depth players should benefit from these few games, but it's just a silver lining.

The Oilers and fans of Oil Country are mostly just hoping the best for Draisaitl in his family at this time.
