The Edmonton Oilers have been linked to trading for Seattle Kraken defenceman Jamie Oleksiak.

In a recent article, writer and analyst David Staples talked about Edmonton's need for more help on defense.
Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now has talked about the Oilers trading for a Top 9 winger, but it's also evident the Oilers could use more help on defense, with Oleksiak being an intriguing possibility.

You will recall that Ty Emberson struggled in the 2025 playoffs and Vincent Desharnais did so in the 2024 playoffs. Both went into the playoffs as inexperienced NHLers and both had enough trouble making passes and defending that they were taken out of the line-up.

Several trades have been made recently, suggesting the trade-market is picking up, and with reports confirming Seattle is looking to part ways with the 6'7", 250-pound Jamie Oleksiak, Oilers could be the next team in the mix.
Frank Seravalli said on his podcast that it's almost a certainty that Seattle will trade the big defenseman, and Kurt Leavins, on a recent Cult of Hockey podcast, said Edmonton could be interested in the trade.
Essentially, the 33-year old Oleksiak would be replacing one of Regula, Stastney, and Emberson, whose futures with the Oilers is uncertain.
Oleksiak is a certain upgrade on the two.
He is the type of defenseman the Oilers need for the playoffs, who plays both the right and left side, and kills penalties. With his size, his net-front presence is an asset.
The question of his cost will depend on whether the Kraken retain a portion of his salary or not. According to Staples, with salary retention, he will cost the Oilers a 2nd-round pick and mid-level prospect, while without it, a 2nd or 3rd-rounder.
At a cap hit of $4.6M, Edmonton would likely require Seattle to retain 50% of his salary to make a trade feasible.
