The Edmonton Oilers are looking to upgrade their goaltending next season, but aren't going to be spending any salary or trade assets to do so - they'll be looking at waivers.

Oilers insiders have hinted previously that Edmonton may be watching the waiver wire in training camp to pick up a goaltender from a team that has 3 or more in their organization. Right now, even the Oilers 3rd goalie Matt Tomkins is very inexperienced.

Edmonton Oilers looking at two goaltenders to shake loose on waivers

On yesterday's edition of Oilers Now, insider Bob Stauffer raised two goalies that may interest the team if they become available on waivers: Michael DiPietro and Nico Daws.
Silovs was going to get claimed on waivers. There's probably two other guys like that out there. They're both in the Eastern conference.

Mike DiPietro, former Vancouver first round pick, just signed a two-year extension with Boston. He is behind Swayman and Korpisalo. I wonder if he's a guy that somebody looks at picking up on waivers if they end up sending him down.

The other guy out there is Nico Daws with New Jersey. They signed Jake Allen, and they've got Jacob Markstrom. So I wonder if Daws has to clear waivers as well.

Both goaltenders would be very-low cost bets coming at the same salary of $812.5K. If either player hits waivers and is available to the Oilers for free and without any impact to their cap, they'll surely take a chance on one of these young goalies.
26 year old Michael DiPietro has been one of the top goalies in the AHL for the last two seasons, posting a .927 in 40 games last season. He looks ready for the NHL, but just doesn't have the opportunity in Boston.
24 year old German native Nico Daws has much more NHL experience with 52 games played in New Jersey, but won't see more time behind their veteran tandem. Daws actually struggled by raw numbers in the AHL, but scouts and advanced stats show some belief in the young 6'4 goalie.
Either one of these goaltenders would bring a higher ceiling than Calvin Pickard for a cheaper number, and with more term as well. It would be tough to lose Pickard after he was the one to overperform last playoffs, but the Oilers need to be ruthless in improving their team - especially in net.
