Team Germany makes major announcement on Leon Draisaitl
Leon Draisaitl is finally getting the chance to represent his country in an international best-on-best tournament, and Germany is showering him with accolades.
First Draisaitl was selected to be Germany’s flag bearer at the Opening Ceremonies, an incredible honour for the Oilers superstar. Especially after his recent family troubles, this moment had a lot of meaning for him - but now, it may have already been topped.
Germany announces Leon Draisaitl as Team Captain
This morning, Team Germany officially announced Leon Draisaitl as their Captain. Tim Stutzle and Moritz Seider will serve as assistants.
This may seem like an obvious choice for Germany to go with Draisaitl, their best player with significant postseason experience. But this is actually a moment of “passing the torch” to Draisaitl.
39 year old Moritz Muller has appeared in 3 Olympics with Germany and has spent 22 seasons in the DEL. He’s been their Team Captain since 2018, but now, Muller is passing off the honour to Draisaitl.
For Draisaitl to have some recognition from the entire country of Germany as their flag bearer is special, but also having the approval from those in their locker room may even be more meaningful for the tournament.
Draisaitl is taking up the mantle of the leader of German Hockey, and rightfully so. He’s already the best German player in NHL history, and the rest of his career will only solidify that fact.
To gain so much respect and recognition from his home country on the world’s biggest stage is incredible for Leon Draisaitl, and of course, well-deserved. Oilers fans are thrilled to see their superstar get this opportunity.
