Analyst warns against rumoured long-term contract extension for Oilers forward

In a recent article of The Athletic, Allan Mitchell outlined the reasons why he believes Edmonton should extend Jack Roslovic and what the terms should be.
The key to a Roslovic contract will be the term. He just turned 29 in late January, and Edmonton will want to avoid the performance cliff that can often hit after a player reaches 30. A reasonable guess on the contract would be three years and an average in the $3-3.5 million range annually. That’s a shorter term than Frederic, a somewhat similar AAV, for a player who is older but will be in more of a feature role.
It’s not enough for a big payday or a very long contract, but Roslovic is worth signing to an extension. Bowman would do well to wait until the end of the playoffs to sign him, in order to make sure the current scoring slump is a blip as opposed to a trend.

Oilers must avoid long-term deals on unknown factors
Oilers have been known to offer long-term contracts to unproven assets. Trent Frederic and Jack Campbell come readily to mind.
Management must avoid this with current forward Jack Roslovic. More so since he hasn't shown consistently that he can produce over an entire season.
He began the 2025-26 strong with 10G and 18 points over 23 games, but has since cooled-off considerably, with only 5G and 6 points over the last 22 games.
So which version are the Oilers getting if they re-sign him?
Last week, Bob Stauffer on Oilers Now suggested maintaining Jack's details at fours.
>q>I'm going to tell you right now, it's going to be in the fours. If you're the Oilers, you want to keep it to a term of four years. So we'll be monitoring that situation ongoing, because he's got the ability to play in the top six on a regular basis.
- Bob Stauffer
The lesser term of three years that Mitchell states above, over Stauffer's four year term, may be warranted.
One year may not seem like much, but if Roslovic should prove ineffective in the post-season or the next, it would mean one less season of worrying and salary cap gymnastics for the GM.
Putting aside the mini cost-benefit analysis, Roslovic has earned himself a contract extension with the Oilers, that much is certain.
Now, he just needs to go out there and be the best version of himself.
