Goalie prospect Connor Ungar has rocketed up the Oilers system this season, and now has shocked the hockey world with an unbelievable save.
Ungar has come out of nowhere the become the Oilers top goalie prospect. Edmonton signed the Calgary-born undrafted goalie in March 2024, and now he may rank as the Oilers’ third best goaltender.
Oilers prospect Connor Ungar shocks hockey world with save of the year candidate
In the first period of last night’s game against the Ontario Reign, Ungar showed exactly what all the hype is about. On a rush chance, Ungar dove across the crease to make a highlight save with the outstretched paddle of his stick.
Sometimes the best save of the hockey season doesn’t even occur in the NHL. This save by Ungar will be remembered as one of the best this year.
Ungar is a shorter goaltender at 6’0, but with this level of athleticism he always has a chance to save a shot against. That’s a level of lateral movement and desperation that Oilers fans haven’t been used to seeing.
It’s not just this one highlight for Ungar this season either, he’s been genuinely dominant in the AHL. With a .939 save percentage through 10 games, he’s been arguably the best goaltender in the minor league.
Out of recent prospects, no Oilers goalie has ever put up this level of AHL results. It looks like there’s something special here.
Ungar has been on a meteoric rise since playing with Brock University just two seasons ago. If he continues to post a near .940 save percentage this season, he’ll earn NHL starts in the future.
