Team Canada absolutely dominated Team France today at their Olympic matchup, and yet the French still had nothing but positives to say about the Canadians.

Canada was incentivized to run up the score today against France to secure their place as the first seed in the tournament. It can be seen as somewhat disrespectful to do that to an opponent, but Canada was as respectful as possible, and that earned some praise from the French.

Team France sing Canada’s praises even after blowout Olympic loss

France knew the position Canada was in today with the need to run up the score, and knew they were up against a much better team. Still, French players did the honourable thing and gave praise to how the Canadians played, and how they conducted themselves personally.
They’re a better team. They’re an all star team, so it’s a little difficult today.
- Stephane De Costa

Very, very good team. But we knew what we were up against. There’s no better hockey experience and learning experience. These guys gave us a good hockey lesson.
- French Coach Yorick Treille
Even the French goaltender who was chased from the net had only praise for Canada, and his meetings with Canadian players. He specifically shouted out Sidney Crosby, and mentioned how nice the Canadians were despite the blowout. Team Canada really lived up to our international reputation.
Even though they had to run up the score, Canada was still respectful of their opponent. When Connor McDavid scored a goal early in the third period with the game out of reach, the Oilers captain didn’t celebrate or rub it in at all.
But when push came to shove and one French player made a dirty hit against Nathan MacKinnon, Team Canada was still ready to stand up for their teammate with a fight from Tom Wilson. The French player may have got more than he bargained for there.
For the last game in the preliminary round, Canada did everything they needed to put themselves in the best position to win.
