Team USA beat Team Germany handedly today at the Olympics, and the Tkachuk brothers also took the opportunity to ruthlessly go after Leon Draisaitl.
Leon Draisaitl was hoping to lead Germany to at least one win during the preliminary games, but unfortunately wasn’t able to do so. Draisaitl is suspected to be dealing with a hand injury sustained before the Olympics, as seen his shooting percentage has tanked well below career average.
Tkachuk brothers chirp Leon Draisaitl on hot mic at Olympics
Matthew Tkachuk was caught in a hot mic chirping Leon Draisaitl that he’s ‘always the bridesmaid’, referencing his two Stanley Cup losses to the hands of the Florida Panthers.
It was pretty pathetic to see his brother Brady join in laughing, who’s never won anything in his career.
Leon Draisaitl tried to respond with an actual play on the ice instead of talk, but Tkachuk wasn’t interested. Draisaitl layed out Matthew Tkachuk with a massive hit in the corner and got up ready to do more, but as he does, Matthew turtled and skated away. Draisaitl laughed in his face.
It’s unfortunate that Draisaitl and Team Germany weren’t able to have a better showing at the Olympics, but they’ve made massive strides developing their national program in recent years - and Draisaitl’s rise to superstardom is a major reason in that.
Draisaitl was only able to register 1 goal and 3 points in 3 games during the preliminary games. Again, it looks like his hand injury is taking a toll on his play.
Germany will get one more chance in the qualifying games for the bracket rounds, where they’ll face a win-or-go-home scenario. Hopefully, Draisaitl can get a win against France in their next game to stay alive in the tournament.
