Team Canada is on the ice for practice ahead of tomorrow’s quarterfinal game, with Nathan MacKinnon and Sam Bennett absent.
MacKinnon appeared to be shaken up after Canada’s last game against France, where he took a high hit from defenceman Pierre Crinon. He was clearly labouring on the ice near the end of the game, and Bennett must have tweaked something as well.
Team Canada confirms starting lineup at practice before quarterfinals
According to insiders at today’s practice, Canada was using the following line combinations:
Their lineup still looks absolutely elite, but missing one of their biggest stars in MacKinnon would be a terrible blow.
However, Coach Jon Cooper told reporters after practice that both MacKinnon and Bennett are taking maintenance days. Both players are expected to play tomorrow, but they may not be at 100% health.
Josh Morrissey also got back on the ice for the full practice today, and looked good to go by reporters in Milan. He was paired back with Colton Parayko, and should be available to play tomorrow.
On yesterday’s edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman reported that Canada has already decided Binnington will be the starting goaltender moving forward. Even though he allowed 2 weaker goals against during the game against France, Binnington is “the guy.”
One (goal against) went through him. The other one, almost after that, he almost had another one go through him. But I thought he was fine. He’s the guy. I’m not worried about it.

Tomorrow, Team Canada will play the winner of today’s game between Czechia and Denmark at 8:40 am MST.
Now entering the bracket rounds of the tournament, every game is an elimination game from here on out. Canada needs to go undefeated the rest of the way to bring home the Gold Medal.
