Oilers superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have yet to face off against each other at this year’s Olympics, but there’s still a path where Canada and Germany could meet.
It’s a complicated path forward that will require Draisaitl and Team Germany to have some big successes, but it’s absolutely possible for McDavid and Canada to meet them.
Team Germany’s path forward to meet Canada in McDavid vs. Draisaitl showdown
First off, Team Canada will need to win their quarterfinal game against either Czechia or Denmark. It’s heavily expected that Canada will do so, and stay alive in the tournament in their hunt for Gold.
Team Germany will need to beat France in their next game, which is a win-or-go-home scenario for them.
After that, Germany will need to beat Team Slovakia to clinch a semi-final berth in the tournament. Germany would enter the semis as the lowest ranked seed.
With Canada having secured their spot as the highest seed, they would match up against Germany in that scenario. However, if Team Sweden upsets Team USA, Sweden would be Canada’s opponent in the semi-final as they are a lower seed than Germany.
Both McDavid and Draisaitl would clearly love an opportunity to match up against each other for the first time in their professional careers - as long as it’s a one-off. Earlier this year, Draisaitl said it would be scary for McDavid, but now he’s also revealed that he’s been in close contact with the Oilers captain through the Olympics and his achievements have been impressive.
Yeah, [we’ve had contact.] It’s impressive, but I’m not surprised. Their team’s obviously feeling it, looking really good, and playing well. Excited for him.

It would be cool for Oilers fans to see the ultra-rare matchup of McDavid vs. Draisaitl. It may give some Edmonton fans reason to be cheering for Team Germany through the next bracket rounds of the tournament.
