The Oilers' regional broadcast team with Jack Michaels and Louie DeBrusk got the promotion to playoff games this year for the first time. They've been taken off the call since, but one Edmontonian will be moving on in Sportsnet.
Gene Principe gets the call for Stanley Cup Final broadcast with Sportsnet
According to Sportsnet PR, Gene Principe will be staying on the broadcast to cover the Stanley Cup Final. Additionally, Sportsnet confirmed their entire schedule, beginning Wednesday June 4 and with a potential Game 7 on June 30.
Principe covered the Oilers Stanley Cup Final back in 2006, but since then hasn't been selected to Sportsnet's national broadcasts for playoff games.
Although Principe has built up a great relationship with the fans and the team, he was replaced in favour of Kyle Bukauskas in last year's Stanley Cup Final. It's incredible to see Sportsnet recognize Gene's great work, and allow him to stay on for the Final.
Principe has been covering the Edmonton Oilers since the 2001-02 season, and his genuine love and respect for the team has always come through in his work. His positivity for the players has produced real relationships that always makes a great interview.
It's fitting that he'll be able to stay with the team and fans by staying on to broadcast the biggest games of the McDavid era. Sportsnet made a great decision to keep Principe on, and there's no one more deserving of the promotion.
