Former Oiler Warren Foegele is on the Los Angeles Kings’ trade block, but insiders are reporting he won’t be a fit for Edmonton at this year’s trade deadline.
Kings GM Ken Holland has openly admitted he’s looking to trade Foegele, who’s in the midst of a disastrous season. He’s become a regular healthy scratch for the Kings, meaning he’ll be a risk for any team making a trade for him.
NHL insider confirms Oilers will not explore reunion with Warren Foegele
According to a new update from NHL insider David Pagnotta, the Oilers are not interested in trading for Foegele.
Some Oilers fans even floated the idea of sending Andrew Mangiapane to Los Angeles for Foegele, but still, it’s not a fit for Edmonton.
Moving Mangiapane is a priority for the Oilers, but one of the reasons for doing so is to clear his entire $3.6M cap hit for this season and next. Foegele comes with a $3.5M salary also until next season, so the cap savings would be nearly negligible for the Oilers.
Foegele still has a skill set that’s valuable in the NHL, but his production this year hasn’t justified his cap hit. In 43 games, he has only 6 goals and 8 points. He’s still got speed to burn and can be an asset on the penalty kill, but that alone isn’t worth a $3.5M contract for two years.
Last season was much better for Foegele, which makes his drop off this season even more questionable. Last year he scored a career high in goals and points - and now he can’t even crack the lineup. He’d likely benefit from a fresh start, but the Oilers can’t afford to be the ones to take that bet.
Instead, the Oilers should be focusing their efforts to improve their defence via trade this season.
