NHL insider reveals decision on former Oilers goalie placed on waivers
Former Oilers goalie Laurent Brossoit has officially cleared waivers, but there still may be a move coming to get him to another NHL roster.
The Chicago Blackhawks placed Brossoit on waivers yesterday, as they don't have room on their roster for him after missing over a year with injury. But, there's still some signs of interest in him by other NHL teams including the Oilers.
Laurent Brossoit clears NHL waivers, but move may still be coming
Despite having the opportunity to claim him for free, it may be best for any team interested in Brossoit to swing a trade with the Blackhawks.
Brossoit carries a $3.3M cap hit for the remainder of this season, and most contending teams wouldn't be willing to take on that risk. However, the Blackhawks or a 3rd team could retain salary in the trade, making him an asset to contenders.
In his last 34 games, Brossoit has posted an incredible save percentage of .927. Oilers fans have been clamouring for the GM to make a trade for Brossoit with retained salary as an upgrade over Calvin Pickard.
After Brossoit's cleared waivers, it also gives the Oilers or any other team more time to evaluate his game in the AHL, and keep him in their minors system as he works back from injury.
For now, all NHL teams will be keeping an eye on his progression for a cheap goalie addition.
We'll see if a move materializes in the next few days to send Brossoit to a new team - possibly his old squad in Edmonton.
