32 Thoughts podcaster and Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported today that Winnipeg Jets star Nikolaj Ehlers will be testing the open market as of July 1st.

Ehlers is one of several prominent free agents who will be going to the open market see what offers they can field and may choose a new team.

Ehlers time with the Jets appears to be ending

there has been a growing concern within the Winnipeg Jets fan base that Ehlers time with the organization is coming to an end.
Over the past couple of seasons, many felt that he may not sign with the team as he has seen his ice time reduced and his overall play in question.
He was drafted in 2014 in the first-round 9th overall by The Jets and he has played his entire career with the team which began in 2015.
Many felt that he would be a high-end goal scorer an elite point getter but throughout his time with the organization, the most goals he's ever scored was 28 in 2021.
This season, he played 69 games scoring 24 goals with 39 assists for 63 points and was a + 14 and 17 penalty minutes.
He has been a very efficient point getter despite his lower numbers as he is on average playing 15 minutes and 48 seconds of ice time.

Should Oilers consider taking a run at Ehlers

Win or lose the Stanley Cup, the Edmonton Oilers have several important decisions over the summer which includes signing Evan Bouchard, potentially signing Connor McDavid to a long-term extension and other needs that need to be addressed.
Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman will likely look at Ehlers and see if he is worth throwing an offer in free agency as many teams will attempt to do so as there is a growing sense that several prominent stars will be playing for new teams' next season.
With a limited free agent market, the price tags may be high for players like Ehlers, when it remains to be seen on how this will go but it appears that he will not be returning to the Jets.
