The Edmonton Oilers are desperately searching for goaltending help anywhere in the NHL, and new reports suggest they checked in on John Gibson and Jeremy Swayman.
The Oilers were heavily linked to Gibson throughout the season as the Anaheim Ducks were clearly willing to move their starting goalie - with Gibson even reportedly willing to waive his NTC for Edmonton.
NHL insider connected Oilers to two different failed goalie trades this season
According to a new update from NHL insider David Pagnotta on Sportsnet's Big Show Podcast, the Edmonton Oilers checked in on Jeremy Swayman back in November, and on John Gibson just before he was traded to Detroit.
John Gibson ended up being dealt to the Detroit Red Wings for
Petr Mrazek and a 2nd round draft pick, a price the Oilers could've easily matched for a starting-calibre goalie.
With all the smoke around Gibson as an available target, the Oilers bot making a trade for him just shows they didn't believe in him to be a Cup winning starter.
Jeremy Swayman on the other hand, continues to be an interesting target for the Oilers. The Boston Bruins are falling fast from a perennial playoff team to an aimless mid-range team, which could lead them to a rebuild - kicked off by trading Swayman.
Even Boston media members are saying the team should be interested in dealing Swayman to Edmonton. The young Bruins starter is coming off the only bad season, but comes at a massive $8.25M cap hit.
The Oilers may need to get creative for their next goaltending solution, whether that's finding a diamond in the rough or making a blockbuster trade. Jeremy Swayman would certainly fit the bill of a sure upgrade.
