Multiple Canadian teams ask NHL commissioner for major national anthem change

Canadian NHL fans booing the US National Anthem in the last few weeks has become national news, and now some teams are asking to cancel anthems entirely.
The anthem booing reached its peak during the NHL's 4 Nations Faceoff tournament, where one American player even sided with Canadian fans.

Unsurprisingly, NHL teams aren't a fan of controversy in the slightest, and are reportedly asking Bettman to cancel the signing of the anthems - but the commissioner has denied the request.
According to reports from Montreal reporter Renaud Lavoie with TVA Sports, the NHL firmly stated that the anthems will continue to be played, but did leave room for adjustment in the future.
»It is mandatory, it is absolutely necessary that the hymns are played," the league would have answered this question, according to Renaud.

The league could possibly amend their decision if the anthem booing worsens or gets more animated in the future. It would have to get pretty bad for them to cancel it altogether. Colleagues over at Blade of Steel had the story.
"However, if the situation were to escalate-if displays of hostility went beyond simple booing-the league could reconsider its stance, he added."
The anthem booing has also made its way to Edmonton Oilers games many times this season, and currently shows no signs of slowing down.
We'll see if the NHL is forced to amend their decision, but at least for this season, it seems National Anthems are here to stay no matter how much fans and teams don't like it anymore.
