Leon Draisaitl appeared to sustain a hand injury with the Oilers just before the Olympics, and now concern is rising that it may still be a lingering issue.
During a 7-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild on January 31st, Draisaitl left the game after getting his right hand evaluated by the Oilers staff.
Fans notice Leon Draisaitl icing right hand after previous injury with Oilers
Draisaitl did return to play after the hand injury against Minnesota, but the Olympics were in everyone’s mind at that point. Any player would play through some pain to be able to represent their country at a once in a lifetime event.
Unfortunately, the Olympics may be worsening whatever hand injury Draisaitl is dealing with. Fans have noticed Draisaitl icing his right hand on the bench after nearly every shift.
Even through the hand injury, Draisaitl is bringing his best effort for Team Germany. Through 2 games of the tournament, Draisaitl has 1 goal and 3 points. Most importantly, he’s firing the puck more often than any other player from Germany.
It would be no surprise that Draisaitl is pushing through an injury to represent Team Germany at the Olympics, but it is cause for concern for the Edmonton Oilers. With only 64 points after 58 games this season, Edmonton will need Draisaitl at full health for the stretch run of the season to secure their playoff spot.
It could be possible that Draisaitl misses some time after the Olympics to heal up this injury, and returns at full health before the playoffs.
For now, Oilers fans can only hope that Draisaitl is okay, and will be able to provide his full offensive talents when he returns to Edmonton at the conclusion of the Olympics.
