Connor McDavid came to the Olympics looking like he was shot out of a cannon, and he’s already on the brink of breaking an Olympic record.
McDavid isn’t just scoring points like he usually does in the NHL, either. He looks like he’s turned into a power forward, adopting Canada’s classic style of blending skill and toughness. It’s rubbing off on the rest of his teammates, and drawing massive praise from fans.
Connor McDavid on brink of Olympic record after just 2 games
Though McDavid is incorporating more physicality into his game, it’s still his pure skill that’s wowing the hockey world.
Through two games, McDavid already has 6 points. Scoring 3 points per game, he’s on pace to set the record for most points by a Canadian in an Olympics to feature NHLers by the next game.
The total record for points by an Olympian was set by Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu in 2006, tied at 11 points. McDavid will be on pace to overtake that record after just 2 more games.
Everybody knows McDavid is a special talent and currently the best player in hockey, but to see him so rapidly ascend the history books for the best Olympic hockey players in history is stunning.
It puts into context that fans are truly watching history with McDavid on the ice.
Oilers fans have always known they had a special talent in Edmonton, but this is McDavid’s first display on the world stage where it’s become undeniable that he’s the best player in the sport.
Hilariously, other analysts outside of Canada really didn’t see this coming. ESPN ranked McDavid as the 3rd best player entering the Olympics this year.
Hopefully McDavid keeps up this pace to take over the Olympic point record. He’ll have all of Canada behind him in support.
