Mangiapane’s agent reveals Flames mistake led to $17.4M contract extension

In a surprising twist, Andrew Mangiapane's former-agent revealed some troubling information that he had withheld when he negotiated his client's contract with Calgary in August, 2022.
The contract in question was Mangiapane's 3-years and $17.4M at a cap hit of $5.8M. This was after the 2021-22 season with Calgary when he scored a career-high 35G, roughly double what he'd scored in any given year prior and since.
At the time of his contract negotiations, Andrew's agent at the time, Ritch Winter, was aware that almost one-third of the 35G - twelve in fact - had been scored off of broken plays, which the agent failed to mention during the process of re-signing Mangiapane.
Nor was he obligated to reveal such a fact. That would have been the GM's responsibility at the time, Toronto's current GM Brad Treliving.
The contract Mangiapane signed with Calgary in 2021-22 was a significant raise from his previous bridge-style contracts, one which the Flames clearly regretted doing, given Mangiapane only scored 17G and 14G in the two subsequent years.
Since Calgary, Mangiapane has played with both Washington, where he recorded 14G, and Edmonton, where's he's currently playing his way out of the city, if the Oilers can find a taker for him.
In an era of metrics and analytics, it's inexcusable that the complete picture was not made clear by the signing general managers, including Stan Bowman. Had he dug a little deeper, he'd have found that the 35G were a one-off and not easily replicated.
For the Oilers, they were never going to get the kind of production from him they'd hoped.
All that remains now is for Bowman to find a buyer, though it will likely cost the team more than they're willing to pay.
