Two pieces of news today emerged from the Olympics that will be of interest to Oilers fans, with one move from Team Canada and another from Team Czechia.
There was plenty of controversy for Team Canada’s decision to roll with Jordan Binnington in Game 1 of the tournament after being one of the worst NHL goalies this season, but he rose to the task with a shutout against Czechia. Even so, Canada will be making a change.
Team Canada projects to start Logan Thompson vs. Switzerland
According to NHL insiders at the Olympics, Logan Thompson was the lone Canadian player to take the ice for a “morning skate” today. It seemed to be a warmup for Thompson, so he projects to earn the start today against Switzerland.
Based off NHL results this season, Thompson is the best goalie Canada is carrying on their roster. Out of all Canadian goalies, Thompson has the highest save percentage with an impressive .912.
Darcy Kuemper is also another solid option for Team Canada in net, but for the time being, it appears Thompson and Binnington the top 2 options for Coach Jon Cooper.
Also of note for Oilers fans, former Oiler David Tomasek has already been pulled from Czechia’s lineup in today’s game against France.
Tomasek was signed by the Oilers last offseason and began this NHL season on Edmonton’s top line alongside Connor McDavid. Unfortunately, he slowly moved down the lineup until he was a consistent healthy scratch.
After scoring 5 points in 22 games, Tomasek terminated his contract to return to the Czech league where he’s had success once again. It’s surprising to see an NHL player from this season pulled from Czechia’s lineup.
Team Canada will face off against Switzerland today at 1:10 MST.
