Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl has publicly declared he's gunning for the NHL's Selke Award for best defensive player this year.
Draisaitl received a few down-ballot votes for the Selke trophy last year, where he had an incredible campaign that saw him as runner up for the league's MVP.
Leom Draisaitl declares he's coming to win Selke Trophy this season
Speaking to the media today, Draisaitl didn't shy away from directly stating that he wants to be considered the best defensive player in the NHL this year.
I'd like to be in the Selke conversation at the end of this year. Obviously there's a lot of things that go into that, that I can learn and get better at, but there's also a lot of things I think I do really well already. So, just looking to chip away at it and get even better.
- Leon Draisaitl
Coming off a Rocket Richard Trophy season, Draisaitl turning his focus to the Selke proves just how dominant his 2-way play has become. If he's able to keep up his offence from last year and improve his defence even more, he could win MVP again.
Although the rest of the NHL hasn't quite caught up yet, the Oilers superstars have evolved to play an impeccable defensive game. Both McDavid and Draisaitl are ultimately committed to every detail in pursuit of winning the Cup, and they want everyone to know.
Draisaitl is clearly entering the season more motivated than ever to refine his game personally, and of course achieve the ultimate team success of a Stanley Cup. Now hardened by two bitter losses, the Oilers are aiming to come back stronger than ever before.
