McGroarty's behaviour with the Jets has been described as a red flag' for any other team acquiring him. McGroarty was expecting to be guaranteed a roster spot, and requested the trade when the Jets didn't give in.
It's yet another example too of a young college hockey player refusing to play for the team that drafted him, and when it's Winnipeg, more questions of retaining players and remaining competitive arise. These college players pretty much have total power over where they play, and for a 20 year old prospect to demand a trade due to lack of ice time would be unheard of in the old NHL.
If this is the type of character that McGroarty's showing already at this stage in his career, than it's best for the Jets to move on from their 14th overall pick. Hopefully they can get a solid return in trade to make up for the lost time and resources spent developing McGroarty.
