The Detroit Red Wings held their end of season media availability today, and one issue GM Steve Yzerman was pressed on was his discarding of defenceman Jake Walman.
The Red Wings traded Walman with draft picks to San Jose for future considerations - only for the Sharks to flip him to Edmonton for much more. It looks like a brutal deal for Detroit, but there may have been more reasons behind the trade.
Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman hints more problems were at play with Jake Walman trade
Red Wings reporters pressed Yzerman for an answer on the apparently brutal deal with Walman, but the GM shut the questions down and insisted that he knew more surrounding the situation.
REPORTER: Can you shed a little insight on Walman, and do you regret that move? Considering you still need defence.
YZERMAN: No and no. Sorry, I'm just not going to elaborate on it.
REPORTER: Why not?
YZERMAN: I choose not to. There are things I don't want to share with you.
For whatever reason the Red Wings got rid of him, fans in Detroit aren't happy to see Walman gone for so little, and now playing a critical role on a playoff team.
The Oilers are now the beneficiaries of picking up Walman in trade, and having him on a value contract until next season.
By all accounts in Edmonton, he's been a great teammate and a great player. Maybe the Wings do just deeply regret their move.
