Frail-sounding Don Cherry appears to sign off for the final time on hockey broadcast
In a meek tone, Don and Tim Cherry took a moment to acknowledge their work on the podcast, as Don declared it their last show.
Cherry rose to prominence as head coach of the Boston Bruins from 1974-1979, championing a rugged style of hockey that he saw in a lengthy AHL career. He was a vocal coach, and that continued into a long media career.
In 1986, Don Cherry joined Hockey Night in Canada for a Coach's Corner Segment with Ron MacLean, and stayed on the air for a 33-year run until 2019. Cherry kept his unabashed style to highlight coaches would be seeing during a game.
His broadcast career ended with a controversy surrounding on-air comments, but Cherry continued with his GrapeVine Podcast, talking hockey with his sons, until the age of 91. It's been a long and fulfilled life contributing to the world of hockey for Cherry.
While his national career ended in controversy, some fans still want to see Cherry honoured for his lifetime of work in the game. That may be unlikely to happen, but plenty of fans will still remember Cherry as an influential figure. All the best to Don in a well-earned retirement.
