The Calgary Flames are heading into training camp expecting another year of rebuilding, which may be assisted by Jonathan Huberdeau's efforts.

Huberdeau arrived in Calgary for the 2022-23 season after Matthew Tkachuk requested a trade. The Flames were hopeful Huberdeau could keep them in contention for the playoffs, but his point totals quickly collapsed in Calgary - and they may not be any better this year after his new comments.

Jonathan Huberdeau looking to take it easy in training camp

At training camp today, Huberdeau made some waves by explaining his absence earlier this week. Reporters assumed Huberdeau missed time with injury maintenance, but he revealed he just didn't feel like coming.
Yeah, just woke up and didn't feel like skating. So, I just didn't skate. That's what happened.

- Jonathan Huberdeau

Although Huberdeau and the media are laughing about the comment, this apathy towards training camp isn't what a team wants to hear from a $10.5M player, and a veteran leader.

While he did improve last season to pot 28 goals and 62 points, he's still been far away from the 115 point player he was in his final year in Florida. Fans of the Flames and many other NHL teams found Huberdeau's comments tone deaf.

Huberdeau likely is just trying to keep the mood light and is preparing as usual for the season - but maybe they should put in some extra work instead.

With these kinds of comments from their team leader, the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are a long way away from having a heated rivalry in the Battle of Alberta.
