The Edmonton Oilers placed Derek Ryan on waivers yesterday, as the team needed to clear cap and roster space for the addition of John Klingberg.
At 38 years old, Ryan's time in the NHL may be done. According to Oilers analyst Alan Mitchell, Ryan will be faced with the choice to either mentor the young players in the AHL this year, or he could retire.
When the Edmonton Oilers called up 26 year old Noah Philp, it looked like time was up for the veteran Derek Ryan.
In a year where they could win the Stanley Cup, the Oilers need the speed and physicality from a younger player.
There was a possibility that Ryan would be claimed by another team, being linked to the Calgary Flames in need of a fourth line center, but the rest of the NHL has passed on him.
Hopefully Ryan does decide to play the year in the AHL if need be, and perhaps be ready for a call up later in the season due to injuries.
However, if Ryan does decide to hand up the skates, it'd be hard to fault him. Ryan made his NHL debut at 30 years old with the Carolina Hurricanes after grinding as an undrafted player.
With 603 career games, Derek Ryan has put together an impressive career for a smaller undrafted defensive player, and he gave his all for the Oilers the last four seasons. Edmonton fans will only be wishing the best for DR.
