Connor McDavid stunned the hockey world with his incredible salary discount, but his agent doesn't believe it will have a ripple affect across the NHL.
Coming in at just $12.5M per year, McDavid left millions on the table in this contract. The Oilers captain clearly just prioritizes winning above all else, which has plenty of other teams looking at their own stars to do the same.
Connor McDavid's agent says other players will not have to take salary discounts
«Bogus. Nonsense. Again, I like to think great relationships across the league and have a lot of respect for all 32 clubs, notwithstanding there being disagreements and things of the sort.
I think it's a non-starter. I'm not suggesting that teams may not try and point to it, but I think it would be a bogus position. And deep down inside, I think every manager will know it's a bogus decision.

McDavid and his agent may try to contain the situation to just themselves, but the reality is that all of the NHL was watching this negotiation and it's stunning result.
In a hard-cap league, the reality is that teams need some value contracts to build a complete roster. It's rare that the top player would be the one to take a discount, and it now shifts the focus on other stars.
The Montreal Canadiens have recently signed
Lane Hutson to a long-term contract at a bargain salary, also invoking the same reasons of helping the team.
Although McDavid's agent may try to downplay it, his decision to take a major salary cut will shift the culture of the sport. Players can take action with their contracts in an all-out pursuit of winning the Cup.
