Signing Perry would be an incredible acquisition for the Oilers, likely for little or no cost at all. After his one year, $4M contract was terminated by the Blackhawks, Corey Perry is expected to sign a deal close to league minimum if he returns this year. Considering he's been cleared by commissioner Gary Bettman and he's being heavily connected to the Oilers, it seems likely Perry will return.
Before the off-ice incident brought Perry's time in Chicago to a close, he was a valuable on-ice contributor for the rebuilding team. In 16 games this year, Perry recorded 4 goals and 9 points, and he famously brings a mean streak and attitude to his game that is invaluable in the playoffs.
If the Oilers are able to sign Perry to a deal close to league minimum, they'd be addressing one of their longest standing needs in depth scoring and a physical veteran leader. As long as the off-ice issues are completely cleared up and the front office does their due diligence in investigating any more claims, there's no reason why Corey Perry wouldn't be a fantastic addition to the Oilers.
