The Edmonton Oilers had their first games of preseason action yesterday, and the team will be pleased to see their new additions making strong first impressions.

The Oilers signed two high-profile European Pros this offseason in Atro Leppanen and David Tomasek, and so far, both players are looking like they could fit.

Oilers new signings stand okt in first preseason games

The 29 year old Czech forward David Tomasek has the inside track to make the NHL roster already, and he cemented it with his first preseason game. Oilers analyst Kurt Leavins reported he was noticeably the best forward for the Oilers, and looks ready to be in the opening night lineup.
David Tomasek. The Oilers best forward. Played the whole game at center. Was 67% on draws. He sure looks like an NHL player to me. As he reacquaints himself to the North American ice surface and game, he will realize he has more time.
In the other split squad game, analysts singled out Leppanen as a standout talent. Oilers analyst David Staples compared his game to that of John Klingberg's, a style that the Oilers clearly sought out last year. He could also be an NHL player.
Leppanen, top scorer in the Finnish league last season, led the Oilers in ice-time at 23:42 and I strongly suspect he also led the team in completed passes. He came out strong, coolly passing the puck out of his own zone on repeated plays.

The young man can make a pass, something the Oilers prioritize in d-men. If you're looking for a stylistic comp, Leppanen plays a heads up passing game in the style of John Klingberg.
These two free agent signings could turn into quality NHL contributors this season on budget contracts. It's just the first offseason game, but they're looking like great pickups for the Oilers.
